Includes correspondence, minutes, and other records of two predecessor organizations: Chicago Bureau of Charities (1894-1909) and Chicago Relief and Aid Society (1867-1909); a history by Gudrun Rom; material relating to relief services for victims of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871; correspondence of Joel Hunter, general superintendent (1919-47), of Amelia Sears, assistant general superintendent (1919-30), and scattered items pertaining to the Social Service Employees' Union.

From 1909 until about 1912 Chicago social worker Gudrun S. Rom was a caseworker with United Charities. She then worked for the Bureau of Public Welfare, the Juvenile Protective Association, and the Juvenile Court before returning to United Charities in 1918 to work in the Near North Side district.
